We finally arrived back at school at 3 o’clock from the educational tour for K-5 pupils. Although we had to walk through a thick forest, we were glad that we made it to school safe and sound.
We were surprised when we found the whole school, including teachers assembled. But they were all smiling and seemed excited. They were clapping at the head teacher who was speaking while standing in front of them. My heart leaped in joy as soon as I heard what he was talking about.
We had been selected to be one of the few schools to perform at the national music festival. The head teacher was trying to explain about the festival but everybody was too excited to pay attention. He caught my attention when he mentioned that the guest of honor would be the cabinet secretary in charge of education. I was overwhelmed with excitement.
“We need to immediately begin serious practice. The festival is only two weeks away. You may now go to class and start preparing,” the head teacher concluded his speech.
This school term could not get any better for me. After visiting my favorite Samburu Park, now I have a chance to perform at a national festival. Moreover, a price of $10,000 will be awarded to the winner in addition to a trophy. “Thank you God for this amazing day. I feel so blessed,” I whispered a prayer to the almighty.
The week that followed was bustling with activity. We had to work all day to make sure that our performances were perfect. Our attires were the traditional sisal skirts. All the pupils were busy running up and down and making sure that everything was perfect for the festival.
“We have to continue working hard. The national drama festival is a big event and we have to perfect our performances” our music teacher said.
And the D-day finally arrived. We all rushed to the bus while carrying our costumes. The venue of the festival was 10 miles away so we enjoyed the adventure along the way. I mostly loved the curvy landscapes.
On arrival, we saw many people. They had all come to watch the festival. We became even more excited. We were led into a room where we put on our costumes.
Then when it was our turn to perform we went behind the stage and the Master of ceremony announced, “Now, let us all welcome pupils from Brook Shine primary school” and the crowd began clapping to welcome us.
And when the curtains opened to reveal us, I became even more excited and as usual, I whispered a prayer, “Please help us God to perform our best” as we made our way to the podium with big smiles on our faces.
Our teacher gave us thumbs up as we began singing. We danced better than we ever had and sang in perfect harmony. “Sing your hearts out,” the music teacher had told us. The crowd went wild with excitement when we matched out off the stage.
I could tell that our teacher was pleased with us by the big smile on his face. We all changed back to our uniforms and sat at the auditorium waiting for the results.
The master of ceremony
then picked up the microphone. My heart was beating fast. All the other pupils
also looked tensed.
“And the school that is the first place in this competition is…” she paused for a few minutes. Tension was at its peak.
“The school is…” she
held her breath, “Brook Shine Primary School! Congratulations on your win”
Once again I whispered a
prayer, “thank you, Lord! We would not have won without you”
Our teacher has then presented the trophy by the minister of education. All the pupils were jumping in joy. However, I was feeling humbled for I knew it was prayers that made us win.
